Running a business is hard enough without also needing to be your own graphic designer, social media manager, copywriter and brand strategist. But for many start-up businesses, new ventures or solo founders, that’s the reality. You might not have the budget (yet) for a marketing person, a branding agency, or even a designer to help you with your content. But you still need to be seen. You still need to show up.
We recently spoke with a founder who’s already running one business and now starting another. Like many, she’s in that in-between phase. She knows social media is essential—but doesn’t have the time, energy or skills to keep up. Sound familiar? If this is you, here’s a straightforward, value-packed guide to help you manage your own social media (without losing your mind).
Let’s start with the basics: why does design even matter? Because branding is more than just a logo—it’s how your business presents itself to the world. And when your social media grid is using a different Canva template each week with different colours, fonts, and vibes, it creates confusion. You might think you’re being creative, but what you’re actually doing is creating inconsistency. Inconsistent branding doesn’t build trust. It doesn’t convert followers into customers. It makes your brand look DIY and unestablished.
So if you’re not a designer and can’t hire one (yet), here’s what to do:
- Keep It Simple.
Use your logo, your brand fonts and your brand colours. Avoid jumping between too many styles. Don’t over-design. A simple, clean post using your existing brand assets is more powerful than a chaotic, overly styled Canva template. - Create 6 Repeatable Templates.
Design six templates in Canva that align with your brand. Use these on rotation to keep your feed looking clean and cohesive. This saves time, reduces decision fatigue, and helps build visual consistency. Keep it light, clear, and on-brand. - Stick to 3–6 Content Categories.
Think about your brand story. What do you want people to know about your business? Categories could include behind-the-scenes, your product features, founder story, values, customer testimonials, and tips or education. For example, if you’re a fashion brand with minimal, high-quality pieces, don’t just post products. Talk about your community, the why behind your designs, and the transformation your product brings. - Upgrade When You Can.
If you have some budget, hire a branding expert or graphic designer to create a set of 30 Instagram templates specifically for your brand. That way, you can simply change the image and copy and post with confidence knowing your visuals align with your tone. Branding agencies like ours offer this as a done-with-you service, so you’re not alone in the process. - Invest in Photography.
Stock images and AI-generated content aren’t doing your brand any favours. Invest in a professional shoot with a head of photography who understands how to shoot for your brand’s vibe and marketing goals. Even a two-hour session can give you a solid library of custom content that elevates your Instagram immediately. Fashion photography, product shots, or founder portraits—this matters. - Be Consistent.
Set aside two hours a week to plan and create content. Aim to post at least three times a week. Even if it’s not perfect, consistency builds brand visibility and trust.
One of our recent clients followed this exact method. She wasn’t a designer, didn’t love social media, and felt unsure about what to post. But she used her custom templates, kept it simple, and used her professional photos. Within six months, she had sold out her first production run and was preparing for her second. That’s the power of simple, consistent marketing.
You don’t need to do everything. You just need a system that supports you until you’re ready to grow.
